Health Benefits of Water Aerobics
As we age we face new challenges, and may begin to find exercise frustrating or contradictory. On one hand, exercise can help to extend and improve quality of life; on the other, many exercises run the risk of causing falls, injuries, or joint damage. Water exercises, like water aerobics, provide the benefits of exercise while eliminating many of the risks of more traditional workouts.
The Aquatic Exercise Association notes that water aerobics can help seniors suffering from arthritis, back problems, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and osteoporosis. This is because water aerobics provides both a cardiovascular burn and a light resistance workout. Cardiovascular exercise is especially important for seniors because it can reduce the participants’ risk for circulatory problems like heart disease, which is a concern for much of the elderly population. Resistance workouts help to maintain strength and stability in the muscles, which can go a long way toward preserving the balance, range of motion, and mobility that we begin to lose as we age. Water Aerobics at Heritage Place
The water aerobics classes for seniors at Heritage Place are taught by two instructors. One instructor, Wendy, is a longtime employee who began teaching swimming and water exercise more than 20 years ago. She uses music, water weights, pool noodles, beach balls, and other equipment to make our classes fun and entertaining. When asked why she thinks water aerobics is so popular among the residents, Wendy said, “Having the opportunity to move your body like you once did, while taking the pressure off your joints, is very refreshing for many. It doesn’t matter where they may be physically, it always seems to put a smile on their face and, if but for a moment, help them forget their limits.”

Our on-site indoor pool is generally open during our water aerobics classes, which occur every Friday at 2 p.m., but can be available at anytime if advance arrangements are made.
