Make the Holidays Special for Your Senior Loved One
The holiday season is upon us, and all of us at Heritage Place are excited! Between November and January, our schedules are quite full; from Thanksgiving, to Christmas, to Hanukkah, to New Years, there are many different fun and festive celebrations. While the holiday-related festivities are something we all very much look forward to, the holidays don't always come stress-free.
The holidays can be a stressful time for seniors, too--especially if they don't live nearby their relatives, struggle with memory loss, or have more limited mobility. During the holiday season, it's especially important to make your senior loved ones know how much they are loved and appreciated, helping to get them into the holiday spirit!
We've gathered our favorite tips for making your senior loved ones feel extra special this season, and have also highlighted some wonderful holiday activities we have for our Heritage Place seniors--family and friends invited!
Tips for Making the Holidays Special for Seniors
Send a thoughtful card or gift to your loved one.
Whether your family member is 10 miles down the road or 3,000 miles across the country, he or she will appreciate the card and gift you send. These gestures may seem small, but they’re important reminders that you care and love the senior in your life, and are thinking of them during this busy holiday season.
One of the best ways to brighten your loved one’s day, especially if he or she is a member of our memory care community, is to mail photos of recent events in your life (photos of grandchildren are always treasured by our residents!), photos of past holiday family gatherings, and photos of family members they may not get to see often. Another wonderful idea is to send photos of them traveling to their favorite places, visiting with friends, and photos of beloved family pets. These photos will help stir lovely memories that you can then discuss when you visit them in person and when you call them over the phone!
Encourage seniors to talk about their favorite holiday memories.
Ask your loved one about her favorite holiday memories. She may decide she wants to recreate some of them, e.g. decorating cookies, going to see Christmas lights in town, or making latkes.
Movies and music!
Get in the spirit by watching favorite holiday movies and listening to seasonal music. Even if you’re not local, you can plan to watch the same movie on the same day, and then use your phone or tablet to video chat and discuss your favorite parts! You could even play your favorite holiday songs while you talk on the phone, so it feels like you’re together.
Offer to help.
Help with the holiday hoopla. Your loved one may need help wrapping gifts or addressing cards, may need snow shoveled from her front porch, or may need a ride to a shopping center or party. Your offers of help will bring you together, and make the holiday season more fun for both of you.
Plan a visit.
Mark your calendar! Your family member probably has favorite places in town he wants to share with you, or local attractions he wants to visit that you could accompany him to. Have fun and let your loved one enjoy the opportunity to play tour guide!
Holidays at Heritage Place!
If your senior loved one is a resident of Heritage Place Senior Living, there are so many fun ways to get involved and help celebrate the holidays.
